STREET ANATOMY

Group Gallery Show

September 3 – December 31, 2010
International Museum of Surgical Science, Anatomy in the Gallery
Chicago, IL

An intriguing movement is underway that sees human anatomy incorporated into contemporary art and pop culture. Street Anatomy, the popular niche blog on medicine, art, and design, has been chronicling this movement for years.

The Street Anatomy gallery show featured the work of nine contemporary artists who integrate human anatomy into their art, providing the public with an understanding of the movement’s widening scope and undeniable impact. The show included works from many of the illustrators, street artists, tattoo artists, and digital artists featured on the Street Anatomy blog.

The show was a celebration of anatomy casting off the constraints of academia and ascending to a headier place in the popular culture.

Participating artists: David Foox, Stephen Shanabrook, Jennifer Caviola (aka CAKE), Emilio Garcia, Jason Freeny, Noah Scalin, Robyn Roth, Heather Tompkins, and Ryan Gerdes.

In a building full of bone saws, scalpels, antique X-rays and other artifacts from the bygone days of medical history, an art gallery is the last thing one might expect to see. However, that’s not to say it feels out of place. In fact, it’s difficult to imagine a better home for Vanessa Ruiz’s “Street Anatomy” exhibit.

Opening Night

Friday, September 3, 2010
5:00 – 9:00 PM CST

Anatomy has become as pervasive in modern culture as it is in medical textbooks. The subject is used extensively in advertising, designer toys, fashion, interior design, street art, and more. Even the heart at the center of the classic ‘I heart Mom’ tattoo has taken a turn for the anatomically correct, as tattoo artists impart a more real and visceral emotion to the piece—a testament to the validity of the statement.
